The Heath School of Music is designed to give children ages 5 through 18 the opportunity to explore their creativity, hidden musical talent, acquire focus, discipline, listening skills and harmony with one another. Children can learn to read music as well as the history of various musicians and musical genres such as classical, gospel, blues, jazz, rock, funk and soul.

This program will not only give children music experience but will also bridge the gap between math, reading and spelling using techniques designed by founder and facilitator Charles Rick Heath.

After students have learned the fundamentals of rhythmic notation, they will begin learning the fundamentals of melodic notation.

Private lessons in drums, piano and bass are available to students upon request.

CURRICULUM:

  • Rhythmic Notation: Students will be taught how to identify and execute notes and rest values, such as quarter, half, whole, eighth, sixteenth notes and rest. Math equations will be used in the form of music notes and rest to help students bridge the gap to math equations they may see on a daily basis in the classroom setting.
  • Melodic Notation: Children will be taught to identify the various letter names on the lines and spaces of the treble clef, staff and bass clef staff. Reading and spelling will be utilized during this activity to help students remember the notes that should be played on their instrument. Once students have mastered the technique of identifying the letter names on the staff, students will then be issued their very own recorder. (The recorder is a wind instrument in the woodwind section of the orchestra.)
  • Introduction of Instrument (Recorder): Students will be taught note fingering and scales in every key.
  • Reading Music: Students will be taught how to read various time signatures, dynamics, and the basics of music theory. After mastering music theory students will then begin reading sheet music accompanied by play-alongs.
  • Music Genres and Artists: Every other week, half of the class session will be devoted to exposing students to various musical genres and musicians from classical, blues, jazz, Latin, pop, funk, rhythm & blues and gospel.

Why are we marketable?

The Heath School is marketable because inner city children don’t have enough programs within their reach to learn about music and instrumentation. Further down the line, the school has the capability of reaching out to the community to bring parents, students and teachers together with the implementation of a drum line.

What materials are needed to begin this program?

$8 will be required of each student to purchase a recorder. This fee will also cover the cost of sheet music.
